FAQ

GENERAL QUESTIONS

What is a Carat? And why gold measured in carat?

A Carat was originally a unit of mass (weight) based on the Carob seed or bean used by ancient merchants in the Middle East. The Carob seed is from the Carob or locust bean tree. The carat is still used as such for the weight of gemstones (1 carat is about 200 mg).

What is difference between 22 karat & 24 karat gold?

Before understanding the difference between 22K and 24K, one must know what K or karat stands for. It is a term used to measure the purity of gold. The higher the karat value, the purer the gold would be. It is measured on a scale of 0 to 24. With this in mind, 24K gold is the purest gold you can buy.

One should know that gold is malleable in its pure state. Other metals such as copper, nickel, silver and palladium are added in the composition to strengthen it and produce jewellery. Thus, one can say that karat is also measurement of the ratio of gold to other metals or alloys.

Below are  the common karat available in the market

24 Karat Gold: 24K gold signifies 99.9 percent purity and also called pure gold as it doesn’t contain traces of any other metals. One should know that there is no higher form of gold than 24K.

22 Karat Gold: It contains 22 parts of gold mixed with 2 parts of other metals such as copper, zinc. Due to other traces of metal in the composition, it is harder than a 24K pure gold and thus, appropriate to make jewellery. Gold of this karat is also known as ‘916 gold’ as it comprises 91.67% of pure gold.

18 Karat Gold: It contains 18 parts of gold to 6 parts of other metals. In percentage terms, 18K gold is equal to 75% gold and the other 25% contains other metals such as Zinc, copper, nickel, etc. The additional metals in 18K gold makes it harder & durable than 24K and 22K, which is too soft for jeweller.

14 Karat Gold: It is made up of 58.3% gold and 41.7% of other metals. Compared to 18k gold, 14K is more durable as well as affordable. The 14K gold jewellery is ideal for everyday use and offers more resistance to wear and tear than 18 and 22K gold.

What is diamond and ideal cut?

Finding the rough diamonds is only the first step. Once diamonds have been mined and processed out of the ‘overburden’ (that is, the kimberlite rocks in which they are embedded), the rough crystals are sorted and categorized according to their size, colour, shape and other characteristics. At this point, a diamond can follow one of two routes. The “Ideal Cut” is a cut based on a specific set of proportions for a round brilliant diamond proposed by gem cutter Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. While Tolkowsky’s original theories presented only one particular combination of proportions for creating the best balance of brilliance and dispersion, today the American Gemological Society recognizes any diamond falling within a narrow range of proportions and finish quality as being an “Ideal Cut” (also called an “AGS 0” or “AGS triple zero”).

JEWELLERY CARE

What type of jewellery is recommended for sensitive skin?

The higher the karat, the higher the ratio of gold to alloys. Anything below 14k means that at least half of the jewellery consists of other alloys, which could be copper or brass. Jewellery labelled “gold-plated” usually contain nickel-base or nickel alloys that can irritate certain skin types. We suggest using 14K, 18K, 22K or 24K gold ornaments only.

Can I wear a platinum ring while doing manual work such as cleaning or gardening?

Platinum is extremely durable and strong, making it ideal for daily wear jewellery. It is also highly resistant to stress and withstands both extreme heat and extreme cold. However, harsh chemicals and extreme wear can affect the appearance of your jewellery, so we recommend removing any before you clean, do the laundry or work in your garden.

What is the best way to clean a platinum ring?

Unlike other jewellery metals, platinum is actually deemed to look better with wear. Surface scratches form a patina that’s considered highly desirable, however, the metal can easily be returned to its original polished state by a jeweller if that’s what you prefer.

How to Clean and Care for Your Gold Jewellery?

a. Remove your gold jewellery before showering, bathing, or cleaning. The exposure to soap and chemicals can dull the gold, necessitating more frequent cleanings. It can also scratch or break down the gold, which is a soft metal and easily damaged

b. Store your gold jewellery separately. It’s important to make sure your pieces of gold jewellery don’t touch any other jewellery when they’re being stored. Because gold is a soft metal, it can easily get scratched or bent out of shape if it comes in contact with other pieces of jewellery

c. Buff your gold jewellery occasionally. Even if your jewellery doesn’t need to be cleaned, buffing it occasionally is a good way to maintain it. Use a soft chamois cloth and gently rub the surface of the piece. It can help restore the shine of the jewellery right away without further cleaning

d. Mix mild dish detergent with warm water. Less abrasive than other cleaners, dish detergent is the best option for cleaning your gold jewellery. Just add a few drops to a small bowl of warm water and use it with a soft brush or cloth to clean your jewellery.

e. Soak your jewellery. You can leave your jewellery in the soap mixture for up to three hours. You can’t over-clean gold with this mixture so don’t worry about leaving it in too long. If your jewellery isn’t that dirty, you can leave it in for ten to fifteen minutes.

f. Rinse your gold jewellery thoroughly in warm water. Make sure that all traces of suds are gone, especially if you’re cleaning a heavily ornamented piece. The water should run clear when you’re finished.

How to Clean and Care for Your Gemstone Jewellery?

a. Be careful of light and heat Just as the sun’s harmful rays can damage our skin, light and heat can affect coloured gemstones’ durability and colour. Over time, and in excess, they can also fade or damage some gemstones such as amethyst, kunzite, topaz and shell cameos.

b. Keep your jewellery away from chemicals Exposure to chemicals can damage or discolour some coloured gems. Even everyday substances like hairspray, lotion, perfume or other cosmetics can contain chemicals that will permanently damage the surface of your gemstones.

c. Safely store your jewellery Proper jewellery storage is often overlooked. Jewellery should never be tossed into a drawer or on top of a dresser unless you’re fine with scratched jewellery and damaged gems.

How to Care for 925 Sterling Silver Jewellery?

Has your silver jewellery become dull-looking? Or worse, has it turned black? Tarnishing is a layer either black or yellow in colour that happens when silver comes in contact with sulfur or hydrogen. At this point, it is best to take the item to a professional cleaner.

Safely storing your silver jewellery in a velvet pouch or lined box and keeping its exposure to light and oxygen to a minimum is the best way to keep your silver shining.
